District Council 37 union delegates reject proposal
for direct election of Council officers
The $100 Plus Club News #96 printed
excerpts of a letter
to the DC 37 delegates from Alonso Myers of the One Person One Vote
Coalition, a group of DC 37 members who want direct democracy in the City
of New York's largest public employee union. Myers made a strong and impassioned
argument for direct democracy, and on October 4, AUD President Judith
Schneider and Secretary-Treasurer Herman Benson joined the Coalition at
a rally outside DC 37's offices. Benson spoke to the rally, which convened
to urge delegates to vote Yes on the proposed amendment to the DC 37 constitution
requiring direct election of Council officers.
However, on October 25th, the delegates
voted down the proposal, 56 to 44 percent. This was the second time in
five years that the amendment was turned down. Lillian Roberts, Executive
Director of DC 37, who was against the proposal, claimed that "DC
37 is a democratic union where those representing both sides of this issue
had the opportunity to fully and freely express their views." ("District
Council 37 union delegates reject proposal for direct election of Council
Officers" 11/17/05)
Fred Newton, an AUD friend who is active in the One
Person One Vote Coalition, told $100 Plus Club News that he was disgusted
and disappointed with the vote, but the group "was not going away."
They continue to strategize about next steps.
